Why buy recycled timber?

Well just think how many average joe carpenters or home handy men rock up at the local hardware or timber yard and buy themself a nice brand new. clean, straight, ready to use length of hardwood timber.. and pay accordingly!

But here at Byron Bay Recylced Timber Furniture we pride ourselves on doing some thing for the environment and re-using what most people throw away and burn. In a disposable society we feel we are helping to make a difference and at least on our part no new trees need to be cut down.

Our products are made entirely from locally Byron sourced recycled Australian hardwoods, including iron bark, yellow box, australian cedar and red gum to name just a few.. Some of these timbers were first cut and used up to 80 or more years ago.. so it is amazing to be able to give them a new lease on life and hopefully survive another lifetime.

We source our timbers from old barns, houses, decks, fences and even old chook sheds... we have numerous contacts who we buy our timbers from too, including builders, farmers, demolition guys and even other carpenters. We pay for the priveledge to pick and choose what timber we can salvage from sometimes big piles of broken and snake riddled timber with rusty nails, bolts and sharp corregated iron hanging from it.

Then our process begins- we gather up the timber and transport it back to our farm/ workshop at broken head where we de-nail it back to bare timber, before we run it through a thicknesser machine, then plane and sand it back for a nice finish.. before cutting to size and then assembling our unique pieces of furniture..

It is a long, tedious and costly process to get our lengths of timber ready for use.. but it is worth it when you stand back and look at the amazing details, grains, stains, rusty nail holes and deep dark timber knots that you can only find on a nice piece of aged hardwood timber. Timber with character and a history. Which also makes your piece unique and no one else could have the same..

Think green and clean..

We have just introduced to our products range an eco-friendly Hemp Fabrics range. Which we offer as a option for our daybed mattress/ bolster and cushion range. Available in a choice of colours and patterns, Hemp is more breathable, durable and even washable than cotton.

In our surfboard rack range we have also a unique eco-friendly product to prevent damage to surfboards tips and tails while being stored in our board racks. It is a protective matt made entirely form recycled old car tyres. available for $40 - $70 dollars depending on size required.
